My ears hurt from all the screaming patientsat work the last couple days...
Imagine this: two confused patients in rooms right next to each other who keep yelling out and sometimes start feeding off each other. And we can't move them away from each other because they both need to be by the nurses station.
"Help!!! Officer Kristen!
Help!!! Officer Kristen! "
Apparently I am a nurse and a cop. Hopefully I am good at both jobs! ;-)
"Humpty Dumbty!! No!!! "
Huh? Where did that come from?
Deaf nurse: Why do you keep screaming? Do you need something? Are you cold?
Pt Screamo: No. I'm just lonely. Hold my hand.
Okay. Here is the thing. I would love to hold everyone's hand and make them feel better. But I am only one person and I have a whole lot of other patients who all want the same thing. So all I can do is reasure you and tell you your safe and I will be back in a few minutes to check on you. Only to walk out and not even 1 minute later the screaming starts again. "Help!! I promise I will be good!! I'll go to church!!!" And now other patients, family members, nurses, and doctors are getting upset because the patient won't stop screaming. But, I have given all the medication I can and stood in there with him every spare second I get and there is really nothing else I can do. I love being a nurse when I feel like I can make a difference. I hate it when I don't have the time or the resources to do things the way that would be best. It would be best for that patient to have someone sit with him all the time. But, that is just not possible.
